Black slate

Slate is a metamorphic rock consisting mainly of minerals with a lamellar or needle-like structure, which are arranged along parallel surfaces as a result of the deformation processes undergone during its formation.

Depending on the nature of the original rock and the pressure and temperature conditions reached during metamorphosis, different types of slate with different mineral compositions can be produced. These variations affect the colour of the material, which can range from grey to black, including shades of green, blue, yellow, red, silver and white. Slate usually has a fine or medium texture.

These rocks are rich in phyllosilicates, but may also contain other minerals such as quartz, garnet, staurolite, tourmaline and disthene.

Most slates are highly resistant to atmospheric agents, making them particularly suitable for outdoor applications.
