Belonging to the Platanus genus and the Platanaceae family, the maple-leaved plane tree (Platanus acerifolia) is the main source of plane wood. It is a highly prized material, especially when processed to obtain mirror-cut surfaces or ornamental burls, used in the manufacture of fine furniture and furnishings.
Physically, this wood is distinguished by its heaviness, good hardness, strength and elasticity. When freshly cut, it has a shiny surface, crossed by small needle-like cracks, and gives off a distinctive smell.
Plane wood is also characterised by its wide range of colours, which can include shades of brown, yellow, grey, red and white, making it visually interesting for decorative uses. However, material that is not suitable for aesthetic applications is usually destined for less valuable uses, such as the production of wood pulp or simply as fuel. It should also be noted that the plane tree is able to withstand low temperatures and frost well.
