S355 steel belongs to the category of structural steels, commonly known as construction steels. It is a low-carbon alloy enriched with a good amount of manganese, an element that significantly contributes to improving its mechanical properties.
Thanks to its composition, this steel has a minimum tensile strength and yield strength suitable for many structural applications, while maintaining high ductility and good toughness. In other words, S355 is able to withstand mechanical stress without breaking easily, adapting well to even significant deformation. Among the available variants, S355J2 can also be supplied in a natural rolled condition, i.e. without additional heat treatment.
Over time, several versions of this steel have been developed, each designed to meet specific technical requirements in the industrial and construction fields. In particular, these variants offer improved performance in terms of mechanical strength, allowing the material to be used in contexts where stresses are particularly high.
Main applications of S355:
- Load-bearing structures: it is widely used for the construction of fundamental building elements, such as beams, columns and pillars, which form the load-bearing framework of buildings.
- Bridges: thanks to its strength combined with good deformability, it is ideal for the construction of bridges, where safety and reliability over time are essential.
- Frames: it is often used to produce sturdy frames for machinery, vehicles and other structures that must guarantee stability and strength.
- Metal carpentry: it is very well suited to various types of work in the carpentry sector, such as the production of welded structures, cold-formed profiles or corrugated sheets for roofing and cladding.
