AISI 316 stainless steel, also known by other names depending on its classification (Inox 18-8-3 in Italy, X5CrNiMo17-12-2 according to European standards, or DIN 1.4401 in Germany), is an alloy belonging to the austenitic stainless steel family, and is therefore non-magnetic. Its composition includes a low percentage of carbon (around 0.05%) and a balanced content of chromium (16-18%), nickel (11-14%) and molybdenum (2-3%).
316 was developed as an evolution of AISI 304, with the aim of improving its resistance to chloride corrosion, a weak point of 304. Thanks to the addition of molybdenum, this steel is much more resistant to corrosion in aggressive environments.
It is considered a “standard” stainless steel, with a corrosion resistance index usually between 25 and 28. This makes it suitable for outdoor use in construction and, to a limited extent, also for applications exposed to seawater or used in non-demanding marine environments.
The molybdenum in the alloy enhances its ability to resist corrosion in natural environments, whether rural, urban or industrial. It is also effective in the presence of chlorides or acids at moderate concentrations. However, when operating at high temperatures or in highly concentrated environments, it is preferable to use even higher performance steels.
AISI 316 is widely used in the food and agri-food industry, as well as in the chemical sector, especially when working with acidic or chlorine-containing substances. In construction, it is used to make structural elements, piping systems and tanks, especially when they have to withstand harsh environmental conditions, such as in coastal areas or areas with high humidity.
A further advantage of this material is that it maintains excellent corrosion resistance even after welding, making it even more versatile for a wide range of applications.
